Tutor Training

Manatee Literacy Council provides free tutor training to help new tutors meet the 12-hour training requirement.
No foreign language skills or teaching experience are required to be a volunteer tutor.

Each new tutor will attend a short orientation plus a tutor training workshop. The orientation is designed to acquaint you with Manatee Literacy Council and to help you make an informed decision about whether or not you want to tutor.
It takes no more than an hour and does not represent any obligation on your part.

The training workshop is conducted by an experienced tutor trainer and is designed to help you learn and practice the techniques of tutoring. The workshops are informative, dynamic, and accredited. The workshop consists of two days, six hours each day. Topics covered include second language acquisition, assessment, cultural awareness, lesson planning, how adults learn, and teaching techniques. At the end of the workshop, you will be qualified to tutor at any level.
Training workshops are open to new and experienced tutors. There is a $25 training fee to cover the cost of materials.

Online Training
Florida Literacy Coalition offers periodic online tutor training. The next training window is October 5-26, 2018. Visit http://floridaliteracytraining.org/ for details.

This online training is not meant as the entire training process, but as a framework to help prospective tutors feel somewhat comfortable working with adults. After completing the online course, the next step is to contact our office and register to become an active tutor member with Manatee Literacy Council. We will ask you to attend a short orientation to learn about our agency and begin the tutoring adventure.

ProLiteracy online training is also available. Contact Manatee Literacy Council for details.
