Why even small steps create massive, measurable impact—and how we calculated it.
A 20% increase in adult literacy in Manatee County would transform the economic, educational, and social fabric of the community—strengthening families, supporting employers, and improving quality of life for tens of thousands of residents.
It’s one of the highest-impact, lowest-cost community investments possible.

Why Adult Literacy Matters in America
In a country as developed and opportunity-rich as the United States, it may come as a surprise that millions of adults struggle to read and write at a basic level. Yet, this is the reality for an estimated 43 million Americans. Many of them grew up in our neighborhoods, attended our schools, worked hard their entire lives—and still slipped through the cracks of the education system.

Dollar General invests in Local Adult Literacy
Recent data from the Barbara Bush Foundation reveals a troubling trend: approximately 28% of adults aged 16-25—nearly 59 million people—read below the equivalent of a third-grade level. This alarming statistic highlights a growing crisis in adult literacy, one that has profound ripple effects across generations.
At the Manatee Literacy Council, we see firsthand how low literacy impacts families. When parents and caregivers struggle with reading, they face daily challenges—from understanding medical instructions to filling out job applications. But perhaps most concerning, they are less equipped to support their children’s literacy development, perpetuating a cycle of educational and economic hardship.
