Tutor Resources

There is a wealth of information available for tutors, some right in the Manatee Literacy Council office. Our experienced tutors can suggest materials for professional development and training, help you to use the various learner series to create engaging lesson plans, and guide you on your tutor journey.

Below are several websites where you’ll find an array of materials to enhance your tutoring. Download a list of 40+ literacy websites and resources (PDF).

Florida Literacy Coalition

Established in 1985, The Florida Literacy Coalition (FLC) promotes, supports, and advocates for the effective delivery of quality adult and family literacy services in the state of Florida.

As a statewide umbrella literacy organization and the host of Florida’s Adult and Family Literacy Resource Center, FLC provides a range of services to support more than 300 adult education, literacy and family literacy providers throughout Florida. Special emphasis is placed on assisting community based literacy organizations with their training and program development needs.

FLC provides many services to community based organizations throughout the state of Florida including professional development, training and technical assistance, ways to promote student involvement, resource sharing, networking, and new literacy-based initiatives.

Dollar General Literacy Foundation

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation was established in 1993 in honor of Dollar General’s co-founder, J.L. Turner, who was functionally illiterate with only a third grade education. He was a farmer’s son who dropped out of school when his father was killed in an accident. With determination and hard work, he began what has now become a successful company.

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation understands that sometimes various life circumstances prevent individuals from learning to read or graduating from high school, but it’s never too late to learn. They believe that every individual deserves an equal opportunity to receive a basic education. Through their funding initiatives, they are committed to helping individuals of all ages receive the educational foundation they need to increase their ability to access post-secondary education opportunities and attain increased employability.

ProLiteracy

ProLiteracy, the largest adult literacy and basic education membership organization in the nation, believes that a safer, stronger, and more sustainable society starts with an educated adult population. For more than 60 years, ProLiteracy has been working across the globe to create a world where every person can read and write.

ProLiteracy’s vision is for every adult to have the ability to fulfill his or her life through literacy.

About 36 million adults in the U.S.—and almost 800 million worldwide—struggle with basic reading, writing and math skills. These individuals struggle to read a menu, fill out a job application, or read a bedtime story to their children. ProLiteracy removes the hurdles that stand in the way of their goals.
