Manatee Literacy Council Receives $10,000 Grant from Peace Presbyterian Church to Support Adult ESL Classes
The Manatee Literacy Council (MLC) is pleased to announce it has received a generous $10,000 grant from Peace Presbyterian Church to support its in-person Adult English as a Second Language (ESL) classes offered at multiple locations throughout Manatee County. This funding will directly sustain the teachers who facilitate these classes, as well as the curriculum and materials needed for the next quarter.
MLC provides in-person ESL instruction in collaboration with a network of local nonprofits and community organizations, bringing classes into neighborhoods where adult learners live and work. These partnerships make learning more accessible by reducing transportation barriers and creating comfortable, community-centered learning environments.
“We are deeply grateful for Peace Presbyterian Church’s ongoing support,” said Michelle Desveaux McLean, Executive Director of the Manatee Literacy Council. “Their generosity strengthens our ability to meet learners where they are, literally and figuratively, and to provide high-quality instruction through trusted community partnerships.”
Each year, MLC’s ESL programs serve hundreds of adult learners representing more than 40 countries. As demand continues to grow, the organization is actively seeking volunteer tutors to work one-on-one with learners, an essential part of advancing MLC’s 1% Project, a countywide initiative to help 1% of adults with the greatest literacy barriers make measurable progress in English and literacy skills. MLC also welcomes additional sponsorships from community partners, faith-based organizations, and businesses that wish to invest in expanding access to English instruction and supporting this transformational goal.
