Bradenton, FL (June 3, 2026) —
The Manatee Literacy Council is pleased to announce that it has received a $10,000 grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation to support staff salaries that make adult literacy and English language programs possible throughout Manatee County.
While literacy programs are often measured by the number of classes taught or learners served, none of that work happens without the dedicated staff members who welcome learners, assess their needs, connect them with resources, support volunteers, and ensure that programs run smoothly. This grant recognizes the critical role that staff play in helping adults achieve their educational and personal goals.
For many adult learners, taking the first step toward improving their literacy or English skills can feel overwhelming. Our staff members are often the first friendly voice they hear and the first people to assure them that they belong. From intake and assessment to class placement and ongoing support, staff help learners navigate challenges and stay engaged in their educational journey.
The need for these services continues to grow. The Manatee Literacy Council currently serves hundreds of adult learners each year through free English classes, one-on-one tutoring, conversation groups, digital learning opportunities, and workforce literacy programs. Many learners are working adults, parents, or recent arrivals to the United States who are seeking better opportunities for themselves and their families.
“This grant helps strengthen the foundation of everything we do,” said Michelle Desveaux McLean, Executive Director of the Manatee Literacy Council. “By investing in the people who support our learners every day, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation is helping us ensure that adults in our community have access to the literacy and English language instruction they need to succeed.”
The Manatee Literacy Council is grateful to the Dollar General Literacy Foundation for its commitment to expanding literacy opportunities and supporting organizations that help adults build brighter futures through education.
Together, we are helping adults gain the skills, confidence, and independence they need to thrive.
