Bradenton, FL (June 3, 2026) —
The Manatee Literacy Council is honored to be featured in the June 2026 edition of La Guía Sarasota in an article titled “Leer, Escribir, Pertenecer” (“Read, Write, Belong”), which explores the transformative power of literacy in our community. You can read the entire article here.
The article highlights how literacy extends far beyond reading and writing. It is the ability to help a child with homework, understand medical instructions, apply for a job, navigate daily life, and participate fully in the community.
The feature also shares the work of the Manatee Literacy Council, which has been helping adults improve their literacy and English language skills since 1978. Through free English classes, one-on-one tutoring, conversation groups, digital learning opportunities, and workforce-focused programs, the organization serves adults from diverse backgrounds throughout Manatee County.
“We are grateful to La Guía Sarasota for shining a light on the importance of adult literacy and the learners, volunteers, and staff who make this work possible,” said Michelle Desveaux McLean, Executive Director of the Manatee Literacy Council. “Every adult deserves the opportunity to build the skills needed to support their family, advance their career, and participate fully in community life.”
The article also recognizes the organization’s multilingual staff and highlights the growing need for literacy and English language services in Manatee County.
Community members are encouraged to read the article and learn more about how literacy changes lives every day. Those interested in volunteering, referring a learner, or supporting the organization’s mission can visit www.manatee-literacy.org.
