Financial Literacy: A Key Step Toward Independence

At the Manatee Literacy Council, literacy is about more than reading and writing. It’s about helping adults gain the skills they need to navigate everyday life with confidence.

One of the most important of those skills is financial literacy.

Understanding how to manage money, build credit, budget, and make informed financial decisions can have a lasting impact on an individual’s stability and opportunity. For many adults learning English or improving their literacy skills, financial systems in the United States can be confusing or unfamiliar. Without clear guidance, it can be difficult to avoid costly mistakes, plan for the future, or fully participate in the economy. That’s why we were excited to partner with Project Prosper to bring a financial literacy series to our learners.  Through this collaboration, participants explored practical topics such as budgeting, banking, credit, and financial planning — gaining tools they can apply immediately in their daily lives.

The results were encouraging! By the end of the series, participants improved their scores on financial literacy assessments by 35%, achieving an 84% average on the final post-test.

Learners demonstrated their commitment to building stronger financial skills. In total, learners participated in 78 hours of financial education throughout the program.

Most importantly, the classes made a real difference for participants and their families.

Some of our learners shared the following sentiments:  “These classes helped me and my family so much.”;  “Thank you for your time! The information provided in these classes is very valuable.”, and “I really enjoyed the classes. They were very practical and helped me understand things I hadn’t fully understood before. The way the content was explained made it easier to apply in real situations.”

When adults gain both language skills and financial knowledge, they are better prepared to navigate their communities, support their families, and plan for the future.

We are grateful to Project Prosper for partnering with us to bring this important learning opportunity to our community.

Because literacy opens doors, and financial knowledge helps people move through them with confidence.
